EUDR — Deforestation Regulation

You need to know that!
EUDR — Deforestation Regulation

Global deforestation is one of the biggest challenges of our time. The European Union is responding to this with the new EU regulation on deforestation-free supply chains (EUDR), which obliges companies to make their supply chains more transparent and sustainable. But what exactly does that mean? Who is affected? And how do you prepare yourself? This article provides a concise overview.

What is EUDR?

Die EUDR (European Union Deforestation Regulation) Aims to ensure that products sold on the EU market are not associated with deforestation or forest degradation. The aim of this regulation is to restrict global deforestation. From December 30, 2025, medium-sized and large companies may only import EUDR-relevant products into the EU, market there for the first time, export or trade within the EU market if they are demonstrably free of deforestation and have been produced in accordance with the applicable legislation of the producer country (Art. 3 EUDR).

Companies must prove to the EU that their products are free of deforestation. For this purpose, due diligence statements must be submitted to the EU information system for each delivery, based on comprehensive data and risk analyses. Only if there is no or negligible risk of deforestation can products continue to be imported, exported or traded on the EU market from December 30, 2025. Otherwise, distribution is prohibited.

Raw materials and products are particularly affected:
  • Cattle (including leather)
  • Wood (e.g. furniture, paper, pulp)
  • palm oil (including cosmetics, food, biofuels)
  • soy (e.g. feed, food)
  • coffee
  • cocoa (including chocolate)
  • rubber (e.g. tires, gloves)

Who does the EUDR apply to and from when?

  • For medium-sized and large companies, the EUDR applies from December 30, 2025
  • For small and micro enterprises, the EUDR comes into force on 30 June 2026
  • Affected players include market participants and retailers. The obligations vary depending on the position in the supply chain and the size of the company.

The EUDR wants to require a rethink for many companies. However, anyone who invests early on in transparency, data management and sustainable partnerships can create real added value — for their own company and for our planet.
